Understanding Margin And Leverage

If you intend to buy dollars in the bank or money-changer for some purpose, you must submit a certain amount of money in the amount of rupiah worth of dollar currency you want to buy. Online forex transactions through brokers on the Internet is different from such transactions. In the forex-trading online, you buy a certain currency with another currency that you borrowed from the broker. Let's say you bought 1 lot EUR / USD at 1.3450 exchange rate means that you have purchased with borrowed 100.000 Euro 134.500 U.S. $ from your broker. Your broker does not lend money never worried that much because the dollar 100.000 Euros you buy you never actually take but you keep returning the same broker.

Yet your broker requires a deposit which is intended to cover the risk of loss if the currency moves in the direction of adverse position your transaction. This deposit is called margin, a much smaller amount than the actual transaction value.

The comparison between the actual value of the transaction with the required margin is known as leverage. The amount of leverage provided by the broker is not the same, usually ranging between 10:1 to 500:1. For instance, a broker set a leverage of 200:1, then for 1 lot of transactions valued at U.S. $ 100.000 is required margin of 500 U.S. $.

Advantages And Disadvantages Margin

With the margin so your capacity to be doubled in trading far above the funds you have. Let's say you have a fund of $ 2000 in your account. If your broker gives leverage of 200:1 then you have the ability to conduct transactions for a maximum of $ 400,000. However you practically impossible to use all the funds available for margin, you also must leave sufficient funds to cover losses that may occur in the transaction.

Because your ability to trade into the fold any movement on the currency markets will have an impact also doubled, be it profit or loss. Because the impact is doubled, whether profit or loss, then you must be very careful in using margin when trading. Carelessness in the use of margin-trading forex is often the biggest cause of fatal losses of a trader.

FOREX Introduction

What to Do If a Breakout Fails

One of the features of the Extended Learning Track (XLT) program is the trading and analysis session. The XLT - Forex Trading has this trading session at different times on different days in order to take advantage of the volatility spikes caused by the release of economic data from different parts of the world. Short term trading and analysis sessions can be very exciting at times. The week of August 21, 2009 was one of those weeks. On Sunday, August 16, 2009, China's main stock index fell over 5%. This panic led to a sharp sell-off around the world on Monday, August 17, 2009, and a flight to safety into the US Dollar. The S&P 500 Cash Index closed at 979.75 on Monday, from a close of 1004.00 on Friday, August 14, 2009. This drop was one of the largest single day drops since the start of the March, 2009 rally. By the middle of the week, the Chinese Shanghai Composite Index officially fell into bear market territory dropping 20% from the highs reached in August, 2009. What was the reaction in the equity markets in the rest of the world? The S&P 500 was back testing 1000, and the sell-off was viewed as a buying opportunity. Sharp sudden drops and going from a bull market to a bear market in a month are not events that a short term trader can plan for. The best that a trader can do is to plan the next trade from start to finish.

On Wednesday, August 19, 2009, the Bank of England released the minutes from their August 4th, 2009 meeting. The nine-member Monetary Policy Committee said it voted 6-3 to raise the total they will spend by 50 billion pounds to 175 billion pounds in the bank's bond purchase program. What was a surprise to the markets was that Bank of England Governor Mervyn King, Timothy Besley, and David Miles had sought a 75 billion pound increase. "All members agreed that substantial further asset purchases were needed over the next three months," the minutes said. The GBPUSD initially spiked higher, and then collapsed from a high of 1.6489 to a low of 1.6373 within the next hour. This news is obviously very bearish for the Sterling. However, Forex traders around the world might view this as a buying opportunity similar to the equity traders and the China sell-off.

A breakout trade from a channel that formed on the 30 minute chart was planned to take advantage of either a trend continuation trade, or a reversal. The steps are to find the highest high of the channel, and the lowest low of the channel, and place an order to go long 5 pips above the high, and to go short 5 pips below the low.

The initial stop loss once entry is met is the opposite end of the channel. Many Forex traders will reverse their position if the stop loss is hit. On certain breakout trades, this is a viable strategy, but since the initial reaction to the news had happened a few hours before, the next move was likely to be either a continuation of the downtrend or a reversal. The targets on a long trade were new turning points and prior turning points from earlier in the week above, while the initial targets on a short trade were previous turning points from the prior week below. The short trade targets below current price were much closer than the long trade targets, but since they were previous turning points, the odds that willing buyers would still be interested are reduced.

The breakout was to the upside around 6:00 AM Central time, and the 6:30 candle closed above the channel at 1.6419. The breakout trader who entered at 1.6405 has a small gain of 14 pips. The risk in the trade is still larger than the reward at this point in the trade. This is where most breakout traders lose money. Some traders who planned the trade will stick to the original plan, but others will sell if the momentum stalls. The early sellers may make a small profit. Their selling will trigger more selling, and often, the remaining breakout traders will panic out of the trade at the bottom letting the small gain turn into a loss. So what does a breakout trader do if they miss the breakout, or the breakout trade stalls or fails?

The XLT - Forex Trading session began at 6:30 AM Central on August 19, 2009. Since the breakout had happened before the start of the session, the XLT students had to look for another opportunity to enter. The next best opportunity to being a part of the actual breakout is to buy a retracement to the origin of the breakout. This entry is the mechanical strategy that we teach and apply in all the XLT classes.

The XLT students will enter close to where the majority of the trading took place prior to the breakout, with the initial stop loss below the lowest low of the channel. The first target will be the highest high prior to the retracement. The next targets will be the new and prior turning points above.

The pullback entry happened during the 7:30 AM Central candle. The first target was reached during the 9:00 AM Central candle. The trade reached the higher targets on 8-20-09. If the breakout trader misses a breakout, the next best entry might just be a pullback. Adding this type of entry to your arsenal may increase your opportunities while at the same time, keeping your risk low.

Just as in other trade instruments, the forex transaction prices stated in the bid price ( 'BID') and demand ( 'ASK'). Price quote ( 'BID') is the price level where a trader can sell the currency, instead asking price ( 'ASK') is the price level where a trader can buy currencies.

An easy way to remember: 'bid' or the price of 'sale' is always lower than the 'Ask' or price 'buy', in other words a forex trader always buys at a price higher than the selling price. The difference between purchase price and the selling price is called the 'spread' is none other than the transaction costs to be paid by a trader.

For a beginner, read the currency pairs at first seemed a little confusing. But it is actually quite easy if you remember two things:

    1. The currency was first mentioned base currency.
    2. The value base currency is always 1 (one).

So let's say the exchange rate of currency pairs USD / JPY 121.76 value it means that 1 U.S. Dollar (USD) is worth 121.76 yen (JPY). If the exchange rate USD / JPY moved up to the mean value of 121.92 U.S. Dollar, Japanese Yen rises as compared to 1 U.S. Dollar is now worth 121.92 yen. Or conversely, the currency fell against the yen today as U.S. Dollar to buy 1 U.S. Dollar Japanese Yen takes the value greater.

Of all the currency pairs of U.S. Dollar, there are four currency pairs where the U.S. Dollar is not the base currency. These four currency pairs are GBP / USD, EUR / USD, AUD / USD, and NZD / USD. If the specified exchange rate GBP / USD is 1.9864 means that 1 British Pound is worth 1.9864 U.S. Dollar. If the value of GBP / USD rose to 1.9918 so happened pound sterling currency strengthened against the U.S. dollar, or vice versa U.S. Dollar is weakening against the pound sterling. So to keep in mind, if the currency pair to rise or fall in value so that is strengthened or weakened the base currency.

Foreign exchange market, or which is known as FOREX is the largest
financial exchanges in the world with a daily transaction volume
reaching more than 2 trillion U.S. dollars. Compare this with the
daily transaction volume of the New York stock exchange which only 25
billion U.S. dollars.

Then what is traded in FOREX? Of course, money. Stock exchange is a
transactions single currency with another currency. The basic
principle, the trader buys a currency type at low value and resell it
at a high value, or otherwise sell a currency at a high value and buy
them back when the currency fell in value. These currencies are traded
through a dealer / broker, and are always traded in currency pairs.
For example Euro U.S. Dollar (EUR / USD), U.S. Dollar and Japanese Yen
(USD / JPY), British Pound and Swiss Franc (GBP / CHF), and so forth.

In contrast to other financial markets like stocks that have a trade
center with the location and time specific trade, Forex has no
perdangangan center. Forex trading via interbank transactions that
occurred throughout the world and takes place continuously throughout
the day.

Until the end of 1990, the stock exchange can only be followed by
financial institutions, large and private individuals who have large
capital. In those days you just can participate in forex transactions
if it has 10 hinggal initial capital of 50 million dollars. Forex
originally only done by the bankers in order to limit the risks due to
currency fluctuations. Forex is not for traders, small traders like
us: us and you. But with the development of internet technology, the
forex brokers and dealers can split large transactions required in the
forex transactions with a smaller volume so that the trader-trader
with limited capital can come and participate. Now many common forex
brokers that require initial deposits under $ 500 U.S., and some
brokers even provide initial deposit requirement of only U.S. $ 10 or
less.
